| Under the Weather If you do feel under the weather then your first port of call should be the local chemist (farmacia) - there are six in the area. All are very helpful and speak good English and they will usually advise a remedy, or if a visit to the doctor is necessary. If you are covered by holiday or private insurance for medical treatment, one of the private surgeries is the place to go. Do keep all your receipts for medical treatment and medication to enable you to make an insurance claim on your return home. A trip to a local doctor will cost you in the region of 70-75 euros. The National Health clinic (Ibsalut) is situated in Calle dels Molins and you can receive treatment there if you have a European Health Card which replaced the old form E111. Take the original form and a photocopy of it, as well as your passport with you. Telephone number 971 587 191. If you require an ambulance in an extreme emergency then ring the police on 092 or the Helpline on 112 and they will make the arrangements. You may well be asked to pay the cost of the ambulance when it arrives, so make sure you have some cash available. Medical Advice NHIC card In theory the NHIC card (available free from the Post Office or online at www.ehic.org.uk) is all that is needed to obtain free medical care while on holiday in Mallorca. However, in practice it can only be used in Spanish NHS clinics and these are often not conveniently situated for tourists. English is rarely spoken in these clinics and generally foreign tourists are not welcomed with open arms. Travel insurance For a few extra pounds an excess waiver can be taken out with the insurance and this means that no money needs to change hands at the clinic. But beware - a small number of policies (eg those sold by Tesco and Boots) require the patient to pay their medical bills in full and reclaim the money upon their return home - avoid these "Pay & Claim" policies and stick to the traditional policies which allow the Doctor to claim directly from the insurance company or you could find your holiday money being eaten up. As a general rule of thumb, travel insurances sold by the travel companies, banks and post office are of good quality. Doctors Some tips to find the best doctors would include:
