Spanish Lottery
Spain has had the lottery 'bug' for over 100 years, and you can have a flutter every day of the week.
The best known Spanish lottery is the Loteria Nacional. This is drawn on a Thursday and Saturday with the Saturday draw being the bigger of the two, in terms of prizemoney. To participate, all you have to do is go into the lottery office on the pedestrian walkway opposite the Rose & Crown, and purchase a ticket with a pre-printed number on it - you do not select your own numbers. The cost of the ticket is usually 6 euros but it can cost more - anything up to 20 euros. The winning numbers are to be found in the local Spanish papers on a Friday and Sunday, or in the Lottery Office the day after the draw (two days in the case of the Saturday lottery).
There are two bumper lotteries over the Christmas period El Gordo and El Nino with millions of pesetas in prizemoney. Tickets cost 20 euros each. There is a daily ONCE lottery between Monday and Friday and you
can purchase your ticket from one of the vendors you will see around town. Tickets cost 1,50 euros between Monday and Thursday and 2,00 euros on Friday. Winning numbers are announced in the local press.
The ticket you buy, again, has pre-printed numbers on it. You will get your money back if either the first or last digit on your ticket matches the winning number. To win more, then you have to match either the last two, last three, or last four numbers to the winning ticket. To scoop the jackpot, all five numbers have to correspond with the winning ticket.
The other two main lotteries are the Primitiva and Bono Loto and, like the UK National Lottery, you pick your own numbers between 1 and 49. The Bono Loto draw takes place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and it costs 0,50 euros per line per day. The Primitiva, which pays higher prizes, is drawn on Thursday and Saturday but costs 1,00 euro per line per day. There is also a special Primitiva drawn on a Sunday. It costs 1,50 euros per entry. Winning is the same as the UK lottery, and you have to get at least three numbers correct to land a prize.
You can also do the Euromiliones lottery which takes place on Friday. It is the same as in the UK except it costs 2,00 euros per go over here.
