Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week.

This week's article - Thursday 4 March 2010

Is that pathetic or what? Browns PR people have obviously told him to smile more. He now breaks into a big Cheshire for just about anything. The worrying part is that the first thing the man who is supposed to be running the country presumably thinks of when receiving news, is not how to tackle the situation but whether he needs to break into a big cheesy grin or not. The mind truly does boggle.

I suppose it's too much to expect the social workers who failed to recognize that one of the children they were supposed to be looking out for was actually being starved to death, would be stuck in the dock next to the toe rag parents, and charged with being accessories before the fact? To me the incompetence and neglect of duty in this tragic case is nothing short of criminal and should be treated as such. Bang a couple of these morons up for a bit and I guarantee the levels of competence in their profession would improve immeasurably virtually overnight. But that won't happen will it? At the time of writing they haven't even been reprimanded for their despicable neglection of duty. Where do they find these people? No, I should say where do they keep finding these people. I think this example sits quite nicely as a follow on from my piece last week about the appalling lowering of standards in the UK, especially in the public service domain. And where are the largest numbers of the work force drawn from?    I don't really have to insult everyone's intelligence by answering that old chestnuts again, do I?

Someone recently asked me (again) why if I live in Spain I constantly write about the situation in the UK. The reason to me is pretty obvious. If I lived in the UK many of the subjects I broach would probably find me in the dock myself. It is only the policy of freedom of speech, condoned and quite rightly supported by this publication that allows me to state in print what millions, and I do mean millions, of those still living in the UK can no longer do under threat of legal retribution. The heady Hyde park soap box glory days are long gone in the auld country so I shall continue to be as much of a spokesman as I can for those no longer able. S'there.

And that's about it. Anyone who tells you the situation is improving for those struggling to make a living is either a liar, the ultimate optimist or a crook. The next person who tells me it can't get any worse had better duck quick! Hang on in there

Keep on sending them e mails. You know I can take it.

And whatever ya do.

Always keep the faith
