Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week. |

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go.......... And boy am I ready. within a few hours of scribing this weeks blurb I shall be back in the bosom as it were, and frankly I cant wait. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy Benidorm. Benidorm suffers the same malady as Mallorca once did . That is to say the total miconception of many who think it all a bit down market, with kiss me quick hats and grockle type oggie oggie's echoing from a host of down market venues. These opinions have generally been formed by people who have either, visited and never stepped outside the small areas that do cater for this type of holiday, or haven't in fact visited at all. Benidorm is in fact a facinating mixture of olde world and remarkably modern surroundings, and is growing all the time. To wander in some areas is to almost be transported into the realms of science fiction. ( It actually brings to my mind the Dan Dare strip in the sadly defunct Eagle comic - and you have to be of quite considerable years to remember that!) With it's towering modern sky scrapers and magnificent hotels parts of it are truly breathtaking. Tear yourself away from the Chinese shops ( who seem to treat every customer as a potential criminal!) and you can find a whole host of magnificent tree lined avenues and shops that would not be out of place in the finer areas of Florida and Palm Springs. I also found prices a little closer to sanity than Mallorca, which seems to have thrown all rational price control into the winds that fill the sails of the some what better heeled members of the community. Any way before I begin to sound like a travel brochure, I leave it there and once more reiterate, that be it ever so humble there really is no place like home. Yeeeeeees. A few people have enquired as to my recent illness I have broached on briefly over the past few weeks. I feel it is worth at least a mention, even if its simply scribed as a warning. Spain is still one of the leading nations of the world that are still extremely liberal with their distribution of antibiotics. In truth these 'cure alls' can, in the wrong hands, become extremely dangerous indeed, and in some cases even fatal. Suffering from an infection in the nether regions (not from a sexual encounter I hasten to add - all right, all right!) and geared up with my private insurance, I attended a highly recommended Benidorm clinic. The problem with some of these clinics is that on every subsequent visit you are seen by a different GP. To cut a very long and painful story short, four successive doctors prescribed me five separate courses of different antibiotics. After six weeks of these treatments I suffered a severe reaction that not only left me in almost unbearable pain, but as I have since learned, in a condition that could have actually led to my demise! Twenty four hours after personally deciding to discontinue the treatment, I began to improve, and am delighted to say am now well on the way to recovery. (albeit on the most horrendously strict diet it has ever been my misfortune to experience). My original problem has also abated and I look foreward to an ' all clear' a few weeks hence. So for heavens sake be warned m'doves. Don't trifle with the old antibiotico's, the results could be catastrophic. And that about winds it up for another seven. Just a quick mention here of Mick the fiddlers fund raiser at Mrs Doyles in Magaluf this Sunday. A host of acts will be appearing from 2pm on, to raise money toward a revolutionary new stem treatment to restore the sight of a young man who actually awoke to find he had gone blind overnight. The horror of that particular experience simply defies the imagination. So if you can be there you will be more than welcome. Till the next scribble up, keep them corners up, keep a twinkle in 'em, and whatever ya do..... Always keep the faith Love Leapy |
