Well, the old boy's eyes were certainly opened this week. Having been lucky enough to obtain two Number one records in South Africa and consequently visiting on a number of occasions, I have always had a yen to re visit, and perhaps even emigrate to what I have always considered one of the most magnificent countries on the planet. In the past, the only Tsetse fly in the ointment was the ugly specter of apartheid. No one celebrated more than I the advent of its abolishment and the subsequent freeing and presidential appointment of the much maligned Nelson Mandela. The images of both black and white cheering their rugby players on in the recent world championships did even more to cement my beliefs that here was a country whose inhabitants were truly learning to live together. With Mandela at its head, here at last we could experience a wonderful example of how all colours and creeds can learn to exist in true peace and harmony. With all this in mind, and work a bit quiet, I decided to approach a couple of S.A. promoters as to the possibilities of obtaining some bookings this winter. The reaction I got was not only totally unexpected, but truly heart breaking. Far from being the paradise both I, and indeed many of us envisage, the true picture of modern day South Africa is not at all as they would prefer us to believe. My inquires prompted a number of emails that I would really like to reproduce in their entirety. Out of deference to the correspondent's privacy and indeed, probable safety, I will simply endeavor to pass on a few selections of their relevant contents. Apparently, since the A.N.C/ Communist party took over in '94, 'white' music, particularly American country, is virtually banned from all radio and TV stations. Likewise live 'white' music tours are also discouraged. The only exceptions to this are the truly gigantic world stars, who buy vast amounts of advertising in the local media and ensure maximum global publicity for South Africa's supposed new liberalism. Murder and robberies are rife. Feral gangs, armed with AK-47's are rampant throughout the country, and apparently seldom apprehended. AIDS is also rife. As many uninformed locals believe having intercourse with virgins is a cure for the condition, the rape and murder of young children and babies is an every day occurrence. Many politicians are ex ANC members who, up to a few years ago, were donning their enemies with blazing tyre necklaces! The whole sorry story simply goes on and on. So, you may ask, where does Mandela stand in all of this? What about this great, tiny stature'd 'giant' of love and democracy so many of us saw as a true exponent of peace and harmony? Well m'doves, all I can do is refer you to a video currently available on 'You Tube'. Those of you with access, simply punch in Nelson Mandela and observe a recent video of him surrounded by local villagers, singing a song whose main theme is a vow to kill all the whites! When we bear in mind this is the country elected to stage the 2010 football World Cup, it is painfully clear that someone, somewhere, has made a huge mistake. To any decent human being it is obvious that the whole decision should be re considered without delay. Mr. Mandela should also be asked to explain why we have been so deceived and mislead as to the conditions prevailing in his country. And indeed, what possible excuse he can put foreword for allowing himself to be videoed vowing to 'kill all whites'? Hmm......!
