Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week. |

Wonderful spate of letters referring to my piece about the Beckhams. As usual most of 'em firmly seized on the wrong end of the stick. My remarks were not a personal attack on these two people but merely the message they send out to our vulnerable youngsters; i.e. the fact that, in today's society, with a bare minimum of education, you can achieve great wealth and success. Unfortunately by the time our young people realize this is, more often than not pure pie in the sky, it's far too late. In their disillusionment and ignorance they try to blot out their failures with chemicals or alcohol. These drugs of course need to be purchased. Without an adequate education to obtain a decent occupation, they subsequently turn to crime to feed their habits. Do I really need to go on? One letter did give me a chuckle however. The missive that referred to the Beckhams as a 'perfectly normal couple' I think even they would take umbrage at that unlikely description! Chatting to a friend of mine this week (yes I do have a few!) he told me he had recently been in negotiations to purchase some property in London's Canary Wharf area. Imagine his surprise when he was asked to bring an interpreter to the negotiations? Apparently the owners spoke no English whatsoever. If this was not disquieting enough, he then went on to tell me that vast areas of the Britain's new Olympic site are actually owned by immigrants, who can in the circumstances, name their own price. No wonder the cost of the games are escalating out of control and the specter of a giant mosque dominating the Olympic walkway looming more and more a distinct and virtually unavoidable possibility. I wonder who the first politician will be to place that particular blackmailing scenario in the public domain. At the risk of a blast on the trumpet, I think it highly likely the only place you will see this particular observation is right here. After all, heaven forbid we should upset anyone! Does anyone in their right mind really believe the McCann's killed their own beloved daughter? Are we actually supposed to accept the fact that somehow they then hid the body and, with the acting talents of the Burtons, subsequently proceeded to deceive the world with a whole façade of grieving parents? Are we meant to then believe they retrieved her little decomposing body, stuffed it in the boot of their car and, under the glare of publicity and police presence, drove off and disposed of it in some remote area of a totally foreign terrain? Give us a break. To me the only thing that glares from the very core of this tragedy is the arrogance and bumbling incompetence of the Portuguese police, most of whom, when this whole sorry saga is finally and hopefully concluded, find themselves out on their respective ears. I see the road works that were underway nearby are finally coming back into the investigative equation. Why on earth they have been overlooked for so long simply defies the imagination. (Too much trouble to excavate perhaps?) These roadwork's, if my memory serves me correctly, were actually being filled in on the morning after her disappearance. To me they were the first place they should have been looking. I believe the little mite was snatched, used and dumped, and where better to dispose of her than at the bottom of some handy road excavations? Even if she's not entombed there, surely it would be more obvious to get the possibility out of the way before embarking on this almost unbelievable 'Clouseau' heartbreaking line of investigation? Let us all pray the whole tragedy is resolved at the earliest opportunity and rest, peace and closure can come to all involved in its web of mystery and heartbreak. Keep the faith Love Leapy |
