Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week.

The other night, having a bit of dinner with some old friends who still reside in the UK, the conversation (as per), soon got around to the pathetic state the country now finds itself in. Once again everyone expressed their disgust and concern at the apathy of the British public for allowing the whole sorry situation to evolve, and what I found most sad, was the collective opinion that it is basically too late to resolve it at all.

I did get the distinct opinion that the old adage 'even the worm will turn when trodden upon' is lurking ever nearer the surface of the old country's way of thinking however. Oddly, in the light of all the political correctness and social injustice now rampant in the country, there are two things that seem to really stick in the craw of the beleaguered Brits. One is the expiration of free speech, which is pretty obvious. But more oddly and something that really has their backs up, is the latest directive that spy chips are to be inserted in dustbins to make sure the correct rubbish is put in the decreed receptacle. This latest big brother excerise must be a bin mans delight. The problem with refuse collecting is that, although it is a most necessary part of our existence, it has always been looked down on as a menial, somewhat demeaning job that didn't exactly entail rocket science and, although someone has to do it, you'd rather it wasn't you. Consequently those who are actually involved are in the main, a bitter miserable bunch that delights in letting you know how important they really are at every given opportunity. How many of us have not been at some time stuck behind a cart, loading on the bins in the middle of the road? All the horns and hand gestures in the world will not change the deadpan faces of the collectors as, mad with one of the few powers they do posses, and pretending not to notice the ever lengthening queue behind them, finally move ahead, only to stop fifty yards down the road and repeat the whole operation again.... and again. These 'bin mans revenges' are of course nothing new. When I was a lad I remember being quite proud to notice our dustbin had been singled out for marking with a large painted cross. It was some time before I realised this was in fact notification to 'brother bin men' that no Christmas tip (or not a large enough one) had been forthcoming from the house in question. and subsequently a great deal of mess and rubbish (including the lid) was often left scattered around my poor Mums tiny but immaculate 'back yard'. I suppose it never dawned on these morons that the people who's didn't cough up enough may simply have not been able to afford it? In fact when my Mum did have a couple of coppers over after the weekly 'budget' she would walk a couple of miles to make sure we had a couple of sweets to suck after Sunday dinner, let alone give it to the dustman.

A few weeks ago we had yet another example of what Blair's balmy 'brothers' are allowing these bin brained collectors to get away with when dustmen refused a bin that was placed a couple of feet short of where it should have been and to the astonishment of the bewildered (and infirm) pensioner owner, was consequently left to overflow for another week.

Bearing their disgraceful past record in mind, these peoples march into a dustman's euphoric 21 st century situation must be giving them all a positive orgasm. 'It's been a long struggle from painted crosses to spy chips my brothers but thanks to our leaders the public have finally been brainwashed into learning how intelligent and important we really are.'

Give us all a break and get on with the dammed job, that's what I say. I dunno, never ends does it?

Keep the faith
