Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week.

I'm not sure all this eco/global warming / carbon footprint hysteria really has too much substance to it you know.

To me the whole thing smells of yet another cred seeking, holier than thou exercise. Rather like the abolition of land mines becoming popular when Princess Di became involved or the once a year 'We are the World' warblers.

I'm not saying we shouldn't work toward less pollution in the world. The poisonous atmosphere of London before the law instigated the introduction of smokeless fuel and the continuing smog's of LA and cities in China are living proof of that. I also abhor the decimation of the rain forests. But global warming? After all what real proof have we been presented with? Pictures of glaciers shearing off? A bit more heat/cold/ or unseasonable weather in certain areas?

Not the sort of evidence I'd like to present in a court of law that's fer sure. Another problem I find is that any protest, even from eminent scientists, who have opposing views and don't consider it a threat, immediately find themselves labeled irresponsible, receive little or no exposure in the media, and are declared persona's non grata by a whole host of the 'eco friendly' concerns - which seem to have sprung up almost everywhere. Do you honestly think that using different light bulbs or banning a few gas heaters (by the way Mr. ....who wrote in last week on this subject, I have actually not had a 'fag' for the last five years!) is going to make the slightest difference to how high the Atlantic will be in 200 years time? And what about the hypocrisy of a government who piously introduce these sanctions and then gives the go ahead for a new runway at Heathrow, which will undoubtedly spill heaven only knows how much poison into the atmosphere over the next few decades? No methinks they all doth protest too much. Plus of course for many involved its turning into a nice little earner. I quote from a recent piece in the Washington Times. 'A whole 'global warming' cottage industry has now sprung up among people who get grants, government agencies who get appropriations, politicians who get publicity and the perpetually indignant who get something new to be indignant about.   Unquote.

We are, under that admonishing finger, constantly being informed we are heading for a global warming crisis of epic proportions and, through our irresponsible production of carbon dioxide, must shoulder most of the blame. The problem here is that many scientists say the temperatures rose first, and this in fact what caused the rise in carbon dioxide. A complete reversal of what the other so called experts are trying to tell us. 'Course you don't hear much from these dissenters do you? Wrong 'message' you see.

If you look back at the history of this planet it has undergone many drastic climate changes. You can't tell me that smatterings of Neanderthals cooking their first leg of Mastodon were the instigators of the ice age. Indeed, when I lived in Saudi ( here he goes again!) it was interesting to visit the arid sandy plains of Taaif and observe the tall rocks that had been eroded by water up to three or four meters high, thousands or possibly millions of years before . That's not much I hear you say. Well, it is when I tell you that Taaif was actually six thousand feet above sea level already - that's quite a drop in the ocean in anyone's book.

No I am not convinced.

Actually the older I get the more angry I am at being told what's right and wrong for me by young know it all's who's grey matter is barely out of nappies. They're the same mob who tell us it's correct to give sex education to four year olds - which frankly to me is tantamount to a form of child abuse. But then what can you do? Well, you can always put it down in print and await the slings and arrows cant you? I await your views with my usual relish.

Just a quick word to those who write their anonymous trash to me. Whatever you may think of both me and my oft unpopular views, at least I'm not ashamed or too frightened to stick my name at the end of it. Awright!

Have a great week.

Spread a little happiness. And whatever ya do - Always keep the faith
