Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week.

Told you those mind numbing TV phone in quizzes were a damned racket didn't I? Mind you, irrespective of that early observation, even I didn't realise the depths they were prepared to plunge to prise every penny possible from the gullible viewers. No matter which way they try to twist and wriggle, the staggering sums these people have purloined over the years results in only one conclusion, they are guilty of extremely serious fraud and for a crime of this callous magnitude, should all be well and truly nicked. It appears that over the years they have actually stolen more than the great train robbers. To my mind were the case proven, they should consequently expect no less punishment than those that were handed down to those railroad raiders of yore. Wouldn't ya just love to see a few twenty fives and thirties handed out? 'Course there won't be. Too many old boys 'networks' involved I'm afraid. A few slapped wrists and a couple of heads rolling down the street and that'll be about it. Still we can all dream cant we?

The thing that really sticks in my craw most is the arrogant distain these people hold for those who ultimately pay their wages. Many of them are so far up their own cosseted rear ends they are completely out of touch with any reality whatsoever. Unfortunately this superior attitude, perhaps not always to such an extreme, does in fact exist right through the showbiz 'fraternity'. Having been involved with the entertainment business for most of my life, (from Royal 'command', to appearing as a reluctant guest of royalty!) I can quite categorically state that with the exception of a small percentage, the people of 'show biz' generally gaze down with a lofty distain on most of the 'peasants' who (often misguidedly) actually put them in their privileged positions in the first place . Indeed, until I temporarily moved into the areas of more down to earth human existence, I too, often felt under the misapprehension that we were all somehow a bit special and rather superior to communal garden 'ordinary' folk. Personally I found my 'gap years' extremely enlightening and often most pleasant. I also discovered of course, that far from being 'peasants' many successful people - in a total reversal of roles - often regarded performers in the entertainment industry as merely somewhat amusing, quaint, and often slightly dotty folk simply put in place to occasionally distract them from the real world. Rather akin to the court jesters of old, who were engaged purely to entertain their masters when the situation arose. So contrary to the superiority complexes held by many of these individuals (especially Sky News anchor people!) quite often the boot is well and truly on the other foot. S'there. Oddly the main exceptions to this show biz malady are those who have proper talent and have subsequently achieved true stardom in their chosen profession. Generally those you don't see staggering out of clubs in the early hours with reddened running nostrils, kaleidoscope pupils and two fingered salutes. Whatcha mean you saw me just the other morning? It was a doppelganger I tell you, and anyway I had a terrible cold! (Will I ever work again I ask myself!)

As you peruse this scribble I shall be girding the loins for our fourth Europe day celebrations, Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of helpers and volunteers, far too many to mention in these restricted jottings, the event has gone from strength to strength and this year it is anticipated some 50,000 people are expected to attend. Let's hope we can see y'all there. Palma Nova sea front, this Sunday the 6 th .   Provided I haven't fallen on my Swiss penknife, it's a date, OK?

Till the demise of the next seven, keep the home fires burning Give us the sunshine of yer smile, and whatever ya do.

Always keep the faith.
