Every week I write and article for the Euro Weekly News, an English-speaking newspaper covering all the major resorts of Spain and the Balearics. You can pick up a copy on a Thursday ... or read it here every week.

As much as I have nothing but admiration for our vivacious newspaper proprietor Michel (and taking a chance on her power to hire and fire!) I cannot disagree more than with her obviously undying adoration of those awful Beckhams. Personally I think both of them are a complete waste of space. The examples they set for our young people are not only irresponsible, but utterly counter productive. To me these two are the epitome of everything that is wrong with our society today, i.e. the totally unacceptable message to our youngsters that you don't need education, or even the ability to string two words together to become a resounding success. All you actually need are passable good looks, as much publicity as you can get, and an ego the size of a house. The examples set by this pair of preening dodo's (and their ilk) are also doing untold damage in the classrooms of the country. No wonder education standards are falling. How can we expect our children to feel the need to better themselves when they are constantly 'media bombarded' with the wealth and trappings that surround people that are not only poorly   educated but - apart from the ability to kick a ball or look like a pouting   Auschwitz victim - utterly lacking in talent as well? What is even more worrying is, that in the face of all these low intellect 'success' stories, many dedicated teachers are quitting the system in total despair. Those taking their places are becoming progressively   less   qualified, creating a downward spiral that not only spells potential disaster but, if the behavioral disintegration of young society in England's inner cities is anything to go by, creating situations that are already out of control.

No, to me these two 'mirror louts' set an appalling example and I for one am delighted to see the back of them. Let us hope that their migratory dust soon settles and we'll all finally be able to actually switch on the TV without having their latest pearl of wisdom or last potty break shoved down our throats. Let us all pray we will now ultimately be spared the squeak of   David, informing us that he 'finks' his life is 'perfec'. Or the sight of 'Posh', who, when recently asked by a driving license clerk to sign her name at the bottom of an official form, enquired in utterly bewildered tones. 'Wot, like I was writing a letter or sumfink?'   Give us all a long, well overdue and utterly deserved break!

Many years ago there existed an advert by a firm of bookmakers which informed us 'You win when you lose with Margolis and Ridley' This in fact meant they paid out four places in a horse race instead of the usual three, so losers ostensibly were also winners.. Because of Spain's ludicrous proportional representation policy, Mallorca now finds itself in more or less the same situation. As the local P.P. parties were one seat short of the number required to take office, and despite taking 47% of the vote, a number of the heavy losers have been able to join with the main opposition and form a majority coalition who are now almost unbelievably attempting to run the island. (If the UK had adopted this policy it would have been highly likely that 'Screaming' Lord Such and his Looney party, or in fact anyone who chose to run, could have taken a seat in the House!) This unlikely destructive rabble is already creating chaos i.e. 'All official communications must only be in Catalan'. 'Give the Kings palace back to the Mallorcan people. Leave the (monstrous) G.E.S.A. building intact, (as this square block is an example of Mallorcan architecture!?) ECT. Need I go on? In the light of all this I can only sign of with one heartfelt cry. One hopefully heard and acted upon before the next elections. All together now. HELP

Hang in, hang on, and whatever ya do.

Always keep the faith.
